Book review: The Joy of Less

August 5, 2012

The Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide: How to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify Your LifeThe Joy of Less, A Minimalist Living Guide: How to Declutter, Organize, and Simplify Your Life by Francine Jay
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think this is the best book I’ve read about decluttering (and I’ve read several). Part of my problem is that we have huge built-in cupboards in our house and the cupboards swallow up so much stuff that we no longer need or use. The idea of taking everything out and choosing what to keep (rather than choosing what to get rid of) is very simple but extremely effective. This book has inspired me to have a big clear-out this weekend, and I’m going to keep on STREAMLINE-ing my stuff. I’m also going to become a ‘minsumer’ – by buying less stuff in the first place.

Like the idea of turning the question around from what to get rid of to what to keep.

Thanks for the review, I’ve wondered about reading this (after enjoying the blog), I might give it a go!

    Hi,
These are precisely the dilemma that I face every single day. Whether its my cupboard or my study, my drawers, the stuff keeps on going in but never gets thrown out. Probably I will read this book sometime and learn some mantra that works for me.
    Thanks for the review.

I moved two years ago to a new residence and have 20 years’ of stuff accumulated from my family, my children and my own years of collecting random garage sale objects with great potential….I’m still going through boxes. I would love to read this book.
Another resource is a website titled flylady.net – it’s wacky, but it’s got good suggestions for processes that work.

You can get the book as an ebook – thereby not adding further to the clutter.
      I’ll check out flylady.net, thanks.
