Magpie Monday – sunshine food

March 12, 2012

It was lovely and sunny yesterday. So it seemed very appropriate that my first charity shop find of the day was Sophie Grigson’s Sunshine Food.

Sophie Grigson's Sunshine Food

This is a cookbook crammed with the flavours of the Mediterranean. Just flicking through the pictures and reading the recipes makes me feel transported to sunnier climes. I can’t wait to try cooking some of these dishes.

And talking of dishes, I’ve been looking out for retro pyrex items because lots of other people who take part in Magpie Monday seem to have found some lovely examples. And at last I found the one for me!

Retro pyrex

This is a white rectangular dish with a brown floral motif, which will be great for cooking a lasagne or a rhubarb crumble. Or I might use it to cook the Chak-Chouka dish from the Sunshine Food book. This consists of baked eggs in a spiced pepper and tomato stew.

Flask

Francesco

I found a couple of other items on the same thrift shopping trip. I was particularly pleased with a flask that has a bright blue paisley print against a black background. This is in mint condition and still has its original ‘Urban Outfitters’ price label on the base. My mother in law was very impressed too – but I’m keeping it for myself! It will be great for picnics and days out. And it will probably pay for itself in no time, because it is much cheaper to take a hot drink with me than buy one in a tea room.

And young Aled was very pleased that I found him a toy car called Francesco from the Cars 2 film. He has been asking for a Francesco car ever since he first saw the film. So to get one for ยฃ1.95 was rather nice.

Do have a look at the other Magpie Monday finds this week at the Me & My Shadow blog.

OO! Lovely flask! I’d keep that too. Glad your little boy finally got his car. I think thrifitng is great for kids to understand they have to wait for the things they really want. It’s always way better when you’ve waited for something.

Yes the flask is lovely! I feel I will be able to pull it out and pour a cup of tea for myself without appearing completely middle-aged ๐Ÿ˜‰

My mum has always been a great thrift shopper, so I learned some good lessons from her.

Nice flask! My son is a big Cars fan, he’d love Francesco…

I might even have been tempted to buy the flask full price, so at less that half price it was a real bargain.

And it was nice to add a Francesco to our huge collection of Lightning McQueens ๐Ÿ˜‰

Love the flask, and I find Pyrex almost irresistable when I find it!

It’s partly because of all the pyrex you’ve showcased in your Magpie Monday posts that I became determined to look out for some for myself ๐Ÿ™‚

cool finds! love the retro pyrex. one of my good friends collects them because they remind her of her grandma which is sweet. ๐Ÿ™‚ she loves the “amish print ones” – they look like this – http://www.etsy.com/listing/52384090/vintage-pyrex-butterprint-mixing-bowl

Ooh some lovely finds there! Would love to collect some vintage pyrex but my husband will kill me if I start another collection!

My husband would kill me if I were to start another collection. So I just bought the one item of pyrex and left the other 17 pyrex items in the shop ๐Ÿ˜‰

I must get more into it and join in this linky – you all seem to find such great stuff – love the flask

Joining in with Magpie Monday has definitely encouraged me to go to charity shops as often as I can! What I don’t show is all the items I leave behind for someone else to buy – my husband would disown me if I bought everything I fancied!

I love your flask – so pretty! I found some Pyrex today as well – happy days!

The flask is so very lovely. I almost bought some Pyrex the other day, may have to go back at the weekend in the hope it is still there

    • March 15, 2012 5:16 pm

Yes I’m very pleased with the flask.

Hope the Pyrex is still there when you go back for it (or that you find some even better Pyrex). There’s quite a lot of Pyrex on eBay but I prefer to view that kind of thing before buying.

This pyrex dish makes me all nostalgic for my grandma and summer holidays in North Wales. Great find!
