Magpie Monday – sunshine food
It was lovely and sunny yesterday. So it seemed very appropriate that my first charity shop find of the day was Sophie Grigson’s Sunshine Food.
This is a cookbook crammed with the flavours of the Mediterranean. Just flicking through the pictures and reading the recipes makes me feel transported to sunnier climes. I can’t wait to try cooking some of these dishes.
And talking of dishes, I’ve been looking out for retro pyrex items because lots of other people who take part in Magpie Monday seem to have found some lovely examples. And at last I found the one for me!
This is a white rectangular dish with a brown floral motif, which will be great for cooking a lasagne or a rhubarb crumble. Or I might use it to cook the Chak-Chouka dish from the Sunshine Food book. This consists of baked eggs in a spiced pepper and tomato stew.
I found a couple of other items on the same thrift shopping trip. I was particularly pleased with a flask that has a bright blue paisley print against a black background. This is in mint condition and still has its original ‘Urban Outfitters’ price label on the base. My mother in law was very impressed too – but I’m keeping it for myself! It will be great for picnics and days out. And it will probably pay for itself in no time, because it is much cheaper to take a hot drink with me than buy one in a tea room.
And young Aled was very pleased that I found him a toy car called Francesco from the Cars 2 film. He has been asking for a Francesco car ever since he first saw the film. So to get one for £1.95 was rather nice.
